Updated Surgical Add-On Code(s) Listing - North Carolina

Certain surgical procedure codes are add-on codes that are always billed with another service.  These add-on codes have a ZZZ indicated in the post-operative period.  Post-operative work is not included in the fee schedule payment for the ZZZ codes.

Listed below are the surgical add-on codes and their primary procedure codes.  Payment will not be made for these add-on codes unless billed in addition to accompanying primary procedure.

Provider Relations’ Automated Development System (ADS) Letter Initiative

Automated Development System (ADS) letters are those letters that are sent to request additional information regarding a claim submission prior to issuing a denial. Once we send one of these letters, we suspend the claim in our system for 30 days, to give the provider an opportunity to supply the requested information. If the requested information is not received within this time period, the claim is ultimately denied for lack of information.

While this process is designed to allow providers an opportunity to supply additional information, it also delays the adjudication of these claims. We have found that in many instances, if the information were included on or with the claim initially, the claim could be processed and paid in a timely manner.

The North Carolina Provider Relations Department currently conducts data analysis to identify providers who receive high volumes of ADS letters as well as those who do not respond to ADS letter requests. Providers identified will receive an informational letter from the Provider Relations Department, for educational purposes only.

We want to ensure that providers have the tools necessary to submit claims for reimbursement and experience lower levels of denials and rejections. We also want to stress the importance of returning documentation anytime it is requested by CIGNA Government Services or the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

If you are interested in CIGNA Government Services sponsored workshops or seminars, please refer to the CIGNA Government Services Web site at http://www.cignamedicare.com/wrkshp/nc/index.html.
