Influenza Season Fast Approaching; Emphasize the Importance of Staff Influenza Vaccinations in Your Office

As a health care worker, you treat or interact with those most vulnerable to influenza disease – older adults, infants, pregnant women, anyone with chronic medical conditions, or residents of nursing homes and other chronic-care facilities. The key element to decreasing the spread of this disease is vaccinating against it.

Vaccination coverage levels for the flu remain low for some of the most at-risk populations in the nation. According to the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, only 34 percent of adults 50 to 64 years of age received an influenza shot. Sixty-four percent of adults over the age of 65 received a flu shot. Although at high risk of complications from influenza, only 12 percent of pregnant women received flu shots. Only 18 percent of household contacts of high-risk persons were immunized. According to the recent “Call to Action” issued by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only 36 percent of health care workers are vaccinated against influenza each year.

If only 36 percent are vaccinated, then the remaining 64 percent of unvaccinated health care workers could cause a disease outbreak in their health care facility. According to the NFID “Call to Action,” epidemiological data suggest that health care workers can spread the highly contagious influenza virus to patients in their care, becoming a primary cause of outbreaks in health care settings. The loss of a life is one among numerous costs a health care setting faces without high influenza vaccination levels among staff. Others include:

These costs and expenses can be offset with a simple solution: get an influenza shot each flu season beginning in October. Influenza immunizations need to be a priority every October in all health care settings for both staff and patients.

The CDC has made few changes to the recommendations of who should receive the influenza vaccine. As recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the following persons are at the greatest risk of complications from flu:

All children under 9 who are being vaccinated for the first time will need to receive a second dose a month later.

Nationally, every year more than 35,000 people die and more than 100,000 people are hospitalized because of influenza. In North Carolina, this disease kills approximately 1,000 people each year while many more are hospitalized. The most effective way to curb this disease is to recommend flu shots every year for both staff and patients. It is the best way to keep North Carolinians healthy and active this flu season.

For more information about the 2004-2005 influenza season, please visit www.cdc.gov/flu/ or www.immunizenc.com.
