Renessa Non-coverage Article

Use of transurethral or transvaginal radiofrequency energy to treat urinary stress incontinence (Renessa & SURx devices)

Recently, radiofrequency energy has been investigated as a technique to shrink and stabilize the endopelvic fascia of the urethra, thus improving the support for the urethra and bladder neck. Two devices have recently received FDA-approval – the Renessa and SURx devices – to perform this procedure. At present, the literature and scientific evidence supporting these devices is insufficient to warrant coverage. The technology assessments available concur with this position. Both of these procedures are considered investigational, and accordingly, neither transvaginal nor transurethral radiofrequency treatments are covered for urinary stress incontinence by CIGNA Government Services Medicare Part B.

As neither of these fit the descriptor of any current CPT code, a non-specific CPT code, 53899, should be used if billing Medicare for one of these procedures.
