Important NPI news for ANSI Claim Status 276/277 Transactions
Effective May 23, 2008 Claim Status Inquiry 276 transactions sent to Medicare must contain an NPI number or the request will be rejected. Providers are encouraged to begin sending their NPIs in their X12 276 queries as soon as possible prior to May 23, 2008 , to avoid this situation. Claim Status inquires received before May 23, 2008 that do not contain a NPI but are returned May 23, 2008 or after will report the NPI. If the legacy identifier is mapped to more than one NPI we will report the first active NPI.
